Sam Altman Set To Return To OpenAI As CEO

Sam Altman, the ousted chief executive officer of Microsoft-backed OpenAI Inc., is set to return to the Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) developer as CEO.

“We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D'Angelo,” OpenAI said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “We are collaborating to figure out the details.”

Altman, also in a post on X, said he is looking forward to returning to OpenAI with the new board and with Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella’s support, and building on its strong partnership with the global software giant.

Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, earlier planned to join Microsoft to lead a new advanced artificial intelligence (AI) research team.

“We are encouraged by the changes to the OpenAI board,” Nadella said in a post on X. “We believe this is a first essential step on a path to more stable, well-informed, and effective governance.”

Last week, OpenAI fired Altman saying the board lost confidence in his ability to lead the company. Brockman also stepped down as chairman of the board.

OpenAI, whose investors include Microsoft, Reid Hoffman’s charitable foundation, and Khosla Ventures, launched ChatGPT in November 2022. ChatGPT, which interacts in a conversational way, is an advanced AI chatbot.

The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests, according to OpenAI.
