Amrutanjan Applies "Audit" Balm To Soothe Whistleblower Allegations

Amrutanjan Health Care Ltd. said Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP is conducting a forensic investigation related to allegations of lapses by certain senior management of the company.

The listed company, which makes ayurvedic balm for pain management, received an anonymous whistleblower complaint alleging lapses by some senior management and it has initiated a forensic investigation by Deloitte, Amrutanjan said in a stock exchange announcement.

The allegations include undue enrichment through marketing, advertising and procurement activities, ethical concerns, and conflict of interest, it added.

The Indian pharmaceutical company said it will extend its full cooperation and provide information to the forensic auditors during the investigation process. Amrutanjan will submit the final report of forensic audit with comments of the management, if any, as per the regulations, it added.

Amrutanjan didn’t reveal the name of the executives against whom the whistleblower leveled allegations. It also didn’t specify the completion period of the forensic investigation.

The company’s board of directors include Chairman & Managing Director S. Sambhu Prasad and Non-Executive Director Pasumarthi S.N. Murthi, while the audit committee consists of Non-Executive Independent Director Raja Venataraman and Prasad, according to its website.

The Chennai-based Amrutanjan’s revised whistleblower policy, which is effective from 1 April 2019 and available on its website, says that all stakeholders, directors and employees are eligible to make protected disclosures under the policy related to the matters concerning the company. All protected disclosures will be recorded as well as thoroughly investigated, it notes.

“The investigation shall be completed normally within 90 days of the receipt of the protected disclosure and is extendable by such period as the audit committee deems fit,” according to the company’s whistleblower policy.

Amrutanjan, one of the household names in India, was started in 1893 by the social reformer, journalist, and freedom fighter Nageswara Rao Pantulu Garu, according to its website. The company offers products for pain management, congestion management, women’s hygiene and beverages.
